A talk about the Peterloo massacre with reference to the involvement of Samuel Bamford

Middleton Library is pleased to welcome Dr Robert Poole for a fascinating talk on “Peterloo and Middleton” as part of the BBC Civilisations Festival. One of the major interests of Robert Poole is popular protest in the age of reform and industrial revolution 1780s-1850s. He is a leading authority on the subject of Peterloo. In 2016 he was interviewed by Melvin Bragg on the BBC Radio 4 show ‘The Matter of the North’ exploring the radical movements that sprang from the North. He will be signing and selling his book, “Return to Peterloo” which offers new perspectives and crucial new evidence. His studies could not have been completed without visits to Middleton library to research Samuel Bamford, whose diaries give a first-hand account of the massacre and more uniquely, a description of daily life for the working classes at this period.
